Located at 891 Mountain Rd., BJ's subs has been open for a while, though neither Fat Guy had ever sampled their fare. Open Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Please call them directly at 384-5881 for more information.
Fat Guy's verdict:
When we decided to hit BJ's Sub, I started making the typical BJ cracks "" you know what I'm saying. Hey, I've got a lowbrow sense of humour. I won't make any apologies for it, but I won't make them anymore, because BJ's is dang good.
So moving on, my first impression of BJ's Subs is that it's super clean. There's nothing spectacular, just a collection of benches and a deli counter, and the floors were lickable "" which is a good sign. I checked the bathrooms as well and though Spartan, once again it was hospital grade clean.
As I approached the deli counter I noted that there's a lot of options on the menu board and I opted to go with a ham club sandwich combo, which comes with chips and a drink ($7.55). When the server asked if I wanted to have bacon, I exclaimed of course!
A sandwich is a sandwich to most people, but BJ's does it better. Here's the kicker, unlike standard subs that are generally composed of thinly sliced processed meat, the ham on my sub was of the roasted real deal variety and there was lots of it. Coupled with bacon, all the fixings and toasted, BJ's Subs is giving Quiszo's a run for their money. Seriously. And for that, they get 8 out 10.
Fatter Guy's verdict:
You know when you expect something to be a certain way, and then it's not what you expected at all? This was the case with BJ's Subs on Mountain Road. I don't know what or why it is, but I've never stepped in this sub shop "" I just had a very bad feeling about it.
Good thing I get to do this column and need to try places around our tri-city, because I was very wrong.
A recent paint job (and if it wasn't recently done, it's well-maintained as the walls are all clean-looking, clean enough to look as if they've recently been painted), the sub shop is lined with booths and has a fast food type counter/menu board. Yes some of the booths are scratched up, but it's simple wear and tear when your resto is close to a local high school and not a detriment to the place's cleanliness.
I decided to go with the pizza sub (for a little 'pizaaz' as it says on the menu board) for $5.05. The sub consisted of a blend of mild and spicy pepperoni fried with onions, mushrooms green peppers and topped with pizza sauce.
I was again surprised by BJ's as a hot sub was delivered to my table. All in all, it was a great pizza sub, the pepperoni was the most impressive part as it was honest to goodness real pepperoni. Sometimes pepperoni just tastes artificial, but in this case it wasn't. As someone who can't deal with spice, it didn't seem as if the pepperoni was very spicy because I wasn't bothered by it, and didn't really notice it. I could have used a bit less of it however, and a bit less sauce; it was messy and I had some meat falling out every now and again.
I also tried a cookie ($1.09! wo holy expensive for a small chocolate chip treat, just sayin'...) and the cookie was good, the chocolate chips were gooey warm. It looked more homemade than certain other sub shop's cookies I've tried and it also tasted pretty homemade, so I can justify the price.
The service was relatively quick and our server was polite and friendly, making sure to double verify our toppings before we sat and waited for our hot subs.
All in all, it was a surprisingly good meal. I give BJ's 8.5/10.
